Earthquake Update - BHU Organic College to re-open 15 June 2011

The BHU College will re-open on Wednesday, 15 June 2011 to all staff and students. Classes will be as scheduled

Engineers have been on Lincoln University's campus this morning using their normal protocol to assess each building's status. LU says the reports received to date have all been positive and that they anticipate that this will continue.

Earthquake Update Monday 13th June

We have closed the BHU to allow staff and students to assess impacts on themselves, families and friends. In recognition of the impact of the aftershocks outside of Lincoln University, the University and the BHU will remain closed tomorrow (Tuesday 14 June).

Sustainable Farm Management - starting 23 June

What key skills will you learn?
• Monitoring and improving livestock/crop/pasture performance.
• Gathering and interpreting farm data.
• Using computers for a variety of management and planning tasks including:
creating farm maps, accounts, internet research and communication.
• Accounting principles and terminology.

Programme details
• Start & end date: June 23 – Sept 2.
• Timetable: Six 2-day blocks, fortnightly on a Thursday & Friday, 9am-4pm.
• Fees : $200.

Qualification
• Telford Certificate in Farm Management Level 3.
This is a NZQA unit standard based qualification.

How the programme is delivered
• Students are enrolled with Telford, a Division of Lincoln University.
• Training is at the Biological Husbandry Unit based at Lincoln University.
• Field trips: sheep & beef, mixed cropping, intensive vegetable or dairy.
• Students will have access to the Lincoln University Library.

Assessment
• Case study, practical assessments and assignments

February 22 Earthquake Update

I hope this finds you, your families and friends alive and safe and with a roof over your heads. It is hard to believe that we have just experienced one of NZ's most tragic events. My thoughts and condolences go out to those who have lost family or friends and to those who are homeless and/or displaced. My house is still standing but close to a cliff so I'm uncertain when or if we will be able to move back in . I’ve relocated with my family to Cheviot and will be there for the next week or so as it's still a bit uncertain when power water & sewage will be back on in Sumner.

Calsses at the BHU will resume next Monday 14th March, the updated timetable is available on the student resources link.

Anthony Hudson age 42, British Born, non resident. I've been working full time at Burn Cottage Vineyard, Cromwell Otago, since Nov 2007 to 1st April 2010, with Jarred Connely.I have just completed the Taruna Cert in Organics and Bio-Dynamics.

I was employed as a tractor/crawler driver, machinery operator & as a vegetable gardener, growing food, herbs and plants concerning the preps. Along with assisting in prep making, compost & general applications of 500, 501 and cpp.
I played a vital role in the operation of the Braun under vine weeder, specific to the Vineyard Management Systems, soil and cover crops.
I have worked for 3 seasons at burn cottage with the pruning.
I have a Class 2 full licence.
Have been working with tractors/machinery for many years in the UK, Denmark and NZ on organic farms.
I have my Grow Safe Cert. and know of general health and safety OSH requirements in the working farm.
I grew and sold Ecological veggies and herbs in Denmark for 2 seasons selling at a health store, farmers market and hotels.

I have had full medical exams here for the past 3 yrs due to Immigration requirements as they would only issue 1yr work permit/visa. All of my medicals I passed.

I can provide excellent references from Jarred and others from past employers.
I am looking for a full term employment with the view to apply for Residency and am single, I am not only looking for vineyard work but on market gardens and general farms. All of which I have past working knowledge.
